The Black Wolf

This story is by Jennifer Knight and was part of our 2016 Winter Writing Contest. You can find all the Winter Writing Contest stories here.

I was walking through the halls of Mitleton High trying to get to my geometry class on time when I run into something or should I say someone; I look up to apologize. However, I cannot look away from the guy with bright green eyes it is like in those cliche books where you look into the person’s eyes and time freezes.

I shot out of bed, falling on the floor. Ow, that hurt. I sit up wincing. Suddenly my dream comes rushing back to me. Huh, what an odd dream to have. I forgot I need to introduce myself I am Bethany Will, I am a 16 year old girl that has blue eyes and blonde hair that goes halfway down my back. My parents are John and Katy Will.

“Bethany! You are going to be late to school!” my mom yells up the stairs. Crap, I slept through my alarm again!! I quickly get ready and run down the stairs to have a quick breakfast with my mom.

Once I get to school, I walk through first, second and third periods in a daze. As I walk to my fourth period: geometry I walk into someone. Just like in my dream I look up to apologize, once I see the bright green eyes, I run. However, I am taken by surprised when I get cornered by the mystery guy.

“Are you okay?” The mystery guy asks.

“Yes” I reply. I blink and the next thing I know he is gone. I slowly get up and make my way toward the cafeteria where I eat alone like the loner I am.

After school finishes, I sit at my dinner table with my mom. You read that correctly, just my mom. My dad is never around anymore. My mom always says he is busy with work, yet I don’t believe her.

“Hun, are you okay?” My mom asks snapping me out of my day dreaming.

“Yeah, sorry. I just had a weird dream that came true today” I reply

“Sometimes our dreams predict the future even if we don’t realize it.” She states confidently.

“Yea, that seems to have happened to me. Hey mom, is it okay if I go to bed early and listen to some music?” I ask with hopeful eyes.

“Of course honey. I will see you in the morning” She answered softly. As I walk up stairs to my bed I think about the day. I get changed into pajamas then lay down on my bed. I on my headphones and blast “Scars To Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara. I slowly start to doze off.

I sit through my boring morning classes. At lunch I sit alone like normal. However, as I am silently eating my lunch, I see a shadow. I look up and see the mystery guy with bright green eyes. He opens his mouth to ask something and-

I wake up to my alarm clock going bizzark next to me. I slap my hand on it hard, causing it to break. My mom is going to kill me! That is the 5th alarm clock I’ve broken in the last month. I slowly get out of bed to get ready for the day.

I walk downstairs in ripped jeans and a black tank top.

“Bethany Will you better be up and ready or you will be late again!!” My mom yells up the stairs not realizing I am standing right in front of her.

“Mom, I am right here!” I reply.

“Oh, well come eat then” She said. We eat in silence then I walk to school.

After my morning classes, I walk into the cafeteria and grab my food. Slowly, I make my way to my little corner. As I start eating, I see a shadow. When I look up my eyes lock with bright green ones. I want to look away, yet I seem I cannot will myself to do so. “Bethany, will you do the honor of going on a date with me?” Even though I want to say no, I can’t.

“I do not even know your name” I reply.

“It is Aiden. Aiden Cooper to be exact.” Aiden said.

“Nice to meet you. Aiden, I would love to go on a date with you.” I finally answer the question as if my mouth had a mind of its own.

“Great! How about tonight?” He grins as if he won the lottery.

“Sounds amazing” I hear myself say still having no control over my mouth. He walks out the doors. When I look out the window I do not see him instead I see a giant black wolf. I finish my lunch in peace thinking over what just happened.

I finish my classes then walk out of school to find Aiden sitting on a bench waiting for me. I walk over toward him and realize that I had yet to tell my mom I wouldn’t be home right away. So, I stop walking, pull out my phone and dial my moms number.

“Hello Bethany, what do you need?” My mom asks.

“Hey mom, I was just calling to tell you I won’t be home right after school today. I am going to hang out with a friend” I reply.

“Oh okay! Have fun!” My mom said.

“I’ll try bye mama” I say before I hang up. I walk over to Aiden and ask “Where are we going?” He simply shakes his head and walks off. I walk quickly to so I can walk next to him. However, once I got caught up I was walking besides a black wolf. Yet, I did not feel scared like I normally would. I slowly reached out and pet the wolf. The wolf nods its big head as if trying to tell me it is okay. He lays down as if telling me to get on his back. I get on his back very slowly trying not to startle him. Once I am fully on the wolf he stands up and starts running I have to grab his fur to avoid falling off.

He runs faster and faster until suddenly he comes to a complete stop. I look up and we are on a beautiful cliff. I slowly slide off the giant black furred wolf that I have yet to name and take in the beauty of the cliff. I turn back to the wolf, yet it is gone. I look around worried that I will never get home, yet suddenly Aiden comes out from behind a tree. Shocked to see him here and very relieved I run up to him and hug him. Once I realized what I was doing I quickly release him.

“I’m so so so sorry!” I speak.

Aiden chuckles “It is fine, I don’t really mind.” He replies. All I do is blush.

“So, where did that wolf go?” I ask

“Well, you’re looking at him” He replies

“What do you mean?” I ask

“I am the wolf. I am a werewolf and you are my mate.” He says slowly as if he was afraid he was going to scare me.

“I get the werewolf thing, but what’s a mate?” I ask nervously.

Aiden only chuckles and says “That is a story for another time.”
