Each week, The Write Practice members are invited to take part in Flash Fiction Fridays, where they can use prompt words to write something new. Marion Bolton regularly rises to this challenge, creating a short, humorous poem for each prompt. We are pleased to present a new collection of her work below.
Marion Bolton came to writing late in life. She joined The Write Practice, and at first wrote short stories, then came to writing poetry quite accidentally. Her first poem, ‘Sonnet,’ was runner-up in a poetry competition, inspiring her to write more poetry. She now enjoys writing short poems based on Flash Fiction Friday prompts.
Gasp
The Last Gasp Motel will have you
Thinking on your feet,
If you like mystery books to read,
This might be up your street.
Genius
The word Previous in Britain also has the meaning ‘taking place or done too soon: premature.’ An example of this might be someone saying, ‘It’s not raining.’ At which point it starts raining and they may say, ‘Oops! Spoke too soon!’. It is this meaning I am intending here.
When I’m writing poetry,
I think that I’m a genius,
But so many times I find,
I’m being rather previous!
Punishment!??
My granddaughter sometimes can be,
Quite naughty and out of sorts,
And so, they bring her round to me,
But I’m the last resort!
Recipe for Disaster?
I’m not really a great cook but I’d get 10/10 for trying. I’ve been told that for meringue, to test if the egg whites are stiff enough, you should turn the bowl upside down and they should stay in the bowl. Well, for me, this might not be such a good idea!
I wanted to make meringue one day,
But it really was a risk.
I put the egg whites in a bowl,
And gave them a brisk whisk.
A Philosophy
There are many lessons to be learnt in life,
And some of them are easy and some can cause us strife,
But the hardest of them all to learn, but learn it if we would,
That even though we can do things, it doesn’t mean we should.
The Poet
There once was a light-hearted poet,
Reluctant to let people know it,
His work was a curse,
It was just flippant verse,
It’s to passion, you see, that he owes it.
Lavinia says
These are great little light-hearted think-quick poems. just up my street.
Well done!!
Gwynneth Mary Lillie says
I loved these poems; The humerous approach to what could be a serious question, dispels the doubts about learning a lesson. They are brief and to the point, and what’s more, I just loved them!
Linda says
Made my day! It was a pleasure to read these after a very complicated day. Thanks for sharing.
