“Wheels of Gold”

June 14, 2019 by Summer Writing Contest 2019 1 Comment

This story is by Stephanie Archangelus and was part of our 2019 Summer Writing Contest. You can find all the writing contest stories here.

…..it was dark and cold…. the underground room was made of cold white stone…

Viros shivered as he paced his way around…. it stank….like mould….and old wine…

…

His gumboots were bright orange, & a worn 10 years old, but still a part of his daily attire. They had weird cream drip marks on them as though a creature had pooped on them from above….

Viros walked into the depths of the cavelike room and took a red stained beaker, from the maplewood desk behind the 400 shelves of precious gold.

It had been a bumper year for Viros and his desk was covered in invoices.

Viros took the beaker and, poured a red fluid from a giant wooden barrel into it.

He stirred it around…

He swilled it.

He smelt it….

“Ahhh…. my family and friends are going to be so happy with this product…..my delicious delicacy….And yet i have another for them…..”

Viros took an intriguing implement as though an apple corer , from his desk.

He walked down the darkened isles, of unending stench to a creation of mouldy wholeness…

Viros drilled into the giant creation and pulled out a plug of edible fermented and agitated cows milk.

He tasted it….

Viros nearly fell over, with the sublime explosive juices that came from His tongue.

His creation, was ready…

“Bang bang bang….Viros! !??are you there??? Its your mama and our Russian friends!! Do you have our gorgeous wares for us??”

Viros gathered up 2 bottles of red wine.

And a wheel of perfect stinking mouldy cheese..

“Okay mama, im coming up now”

Viros gathered the feast ingredients.

“I always preferred to be in this room than out with others…a glass of wine and a slice of cheese that i make myself… ill have one now..”

Viros, drank a glass of red wine and a slice of cheese in his downstairs cellar and contemplated his creations. He looked around as though he was trying to escape his mothers overbearing lifestyle….

He decided he did not want to share his red and gold treasures today…

Viros noticed a crack in the wooden boards under the upper window….

Viros pulled at it…..

It came away…and light streamed in..

He grabbed a wheel of cheese,

and a bottle of red wine….

And hauled himself up, into the light of the real world through the newly discovered basement hatch….

Viros….may have escaped his social obligations ….but hed have to come back for his red treasured liquid and wheels of gold…..
