I suddenly woke up at the shrill noise that came from upstairs. I wondered what could be there at this time of the night. Nervously, I climbed out of my bed and walked past various rooms to find a slightly open door of my father’s bedroom. Slowly, I peeped through the ajar door and found vague figure of my father in his cloak, standing in front of the window, looking at the moon. He took a deep breath and suddenly flings his cloak open and transformed into a bat! The bat-father flew out into the midnight sky vanishing from my sight. I couldn’t believe what I had seen! How could this be happening? Was my father, who I believed was a police officer a batman or someone with supernatural powers?
Fearfully, I entered into my father’s room and opened the door widely. I looked around to make sure that no one was lurking in the shadows and turned the light on.
I started to look at everything there was to see if I found anything interesting, but there was nothing suspicious. I looked for a couple more minutes when I felt like giving up, and then an alarming red book caught my eye. I picked it up and read the gold letters scrawled on it “MY DIARY.” I was hesitating for a while, wondering if I should open it or not, but with curiosity flooding inside me, I decided to open it.
I read just a few entries and got some idea of what was happening. I looked down at the book and sobbed, feeling lost and scared. My father just selected a few particular people and tried to kill them!
The person who I thought was a strict and honest police officer was a murderer? I sat back and opened the diary to know more when suddenly a large gust of wind hit the room. It took me a moment to realize that my father had returned home. I was busted.
Father approached me slowly, glaring at me with his intense eyes. I felt petrified at his presence and tried to back away from him.
“What do you think you’re doing in my room at dawn? You have no right to sneak in here and read my personal diary!” He bellowed furiously, looking at the gleaming red book. I glanced at him and immediately anger burst through me. Words flew out of my mouth like thunder before I could stop them.
“I thought you were a police officer! But you aren’t! Who are you and why are you killing so many people!” I screamed, pausing to catch my breath.
Father uttered unexpectedly “You’d better not know anything.”
“And what is it that?” I asked.
“I am not who you think I am.” He hissed “I am a vampire.”
I was taken aback by this. How could this be possible?
“What happened? Tell me.” I said wanting to know what else the vampire was hiding from me.
So he told me. “One dark night, when all of us were returning from a trip, a couple of cloaked figures – vampires – attacked us. I left you in the car with your mother, while I went and tried to fight them, but then some of the vampires headed towards the car. I tried to reach there and help you, but some other vampires were holding me back, sucking my blood. I wasn’t able to do anything but watch whatever that was going to happen.”
He sobbed “Your mother left you in the car and got out to try and fight them. But she was killed the minute she got out. I felt useless as I wasn’t able to do anything.”
“But how did we survive?” I asked
“After your mother was killed, they tried to approach you, and then suddenly a lady appeared out of nowhere. She fought off the vampires before they could do anything to you. She was the Princess of Vampires, Marissa. She told me that you have special blood that makes any vampire who drinks it so powerful that they can do anything. That’s why those vampires wanted to take you. The princess transformed me into a vampire so that I could protect you from those evil vampires and she also agreed to protect you at her place. You come to my place only at a certain time every year because at that time all the evil vampires are paralysed. It is a curse. It is the time we try to kill them.”
Me? Have special blood? I gasped, shocked to hear the news. And I also didn’t even realize that I have been staying with a vampire for the past eleven years.
“Tomorrow you need to go back to Marissa’s place. It is protected with enchantments around it so you can keep safe. Once all the vampires are killed, I will come and take you or you can come next year.”
I shuddered at the thought of those vampires. It was terrifying!!
“I will come with you.” I said boldly “I can’t let you do this by yourself.”
“You can’t come! If you come then you will be in danger and it will be easy for the evils vampires to get you. We can’t let this happen.” He said, “And I am not doing this by myself, the princess is helping me.”
“You mustn’t worry about me. Be brave!” Father said, “I will try my best and try to come to you soon.”
Although I wanted to argue with him, I nodded solemnly. I feel devastated to leave him to face all the danger. Leaving the house that night I hoped that father will come again to take me back.
