“How disappointing to find out that the Declaration of Independence for the original thirteen colonies declaring independence from The Kingdom of Great Britain, was signed not on the 4th of July, but on the 2nd of August.”
Mattie laughed thinking back on that day 10 years before, when she had asked Tess if she thought the actual day we celebrated made any difference in the way we felt about our country. Americans had been celebrating being united and using that date for over 200 years and hadn’t lost a thing due to the date it was signed.
Two 14 year old girls, best friends forever, bosom buddies, anything else you wanted to call them, all but sisters, that’s what they were. Tess was pretty much the opposite personality from Mattie. They found that out early on in grade school, when Mikey Johnson had pulled Tess’ pony tail and Mattie ran up and knocked him down. Shocked, Tess had stared in disbelief that a girl could actually defend herself. Right then Mattie knew she would be defending Tess throughout the rest of the 2nd grade year and for many years to come.
Reliving the day of that 4th of July parade, ten years before, Mattie remembered how Tess had accepted the fact that the date was inconsequential, as she ceremoniously accepted her top hat and flag. She went out to sit on the float passing candy out from the top hat and waving her flag back and forth, a glowing example of patriotism.
As Mattie watched the procession from the sidelines, she had given a silent thanks to all those who had stood before her, to defend and bring unity to our country. The chills that ran over her and displayed their little bumps on her arms, gave testimony to the depth of effect those thoughts were having on her conscious mind. In those moments, Mattie took an oath to love, defend and cherish this freedom, for as long as she lived.
Today was the anniversary of that promise, she had kept it for ten years thus far. Never had a 4th of July celebration passed without the memory of that oath rising strong in Mattie’s mind.
So much had happened in those ten years. The girls had finished high school, gone off to college, come home and made choices for their directions in life. Mattie chose to go into the political field, while Tess was still sort of just hanging on waiting for Mr. Right, she guessed.
Funny how your attraction draws to you, all that you desire out of life. Mattie wanted to see her childhood promise, to honor those who had given so much for the freedoms she experienced, become a reality for all who choose to live as citizens of this great nation. As a supporter of her chosen party, she had volunteered for many projects that fit with her beliefs.
Reminiscing how through the years she had professed to Tess and others, the way to make change is to realize that with love, real love, true love, we can express our beliefs and desires and communicate why we believe as we do. With this love, we can touch the hearts of those who would stand and rebel merely because they chose to be related with a different party, with an understanding that we are one. It isn’t about being a party of name, it is about joining in beliefs with a community that represents like beliefs. She thought about how, with as many different opinions as there are living souls, it may be difficult to find middle ground at times. By perseverance in faith and trust, working together to bring about unity, with a band of brothers and sisters who share this Great Nation, the independence those long ago patriots stood for, will reverberate through the veins of us all.
After waiting until the involuntary lump from her thoughts had left her throat, Mattie placed a call to JD Lindquist. Who was JD Lindquist? Oh yes, she knew what he was, just not who he was. Would a position on his staff as he had suggested, be one that would keep her in line with her deepest desires for America? Confident that what she had put out to the Universe would return as she had believed, she placed the call.
The voice she heard was deep, friendly and resonating confidence, “This is JD, what can I do for you?”
With a silent chuckle she thought about saying, “Tell me who you are!” Just as quickly as the thought flashed, it disappeared. Reality took charge over her subconscious thoughts, “Yes, this is Mattie Olson, we met at Senator Wyatt’s barbeque last Friday evening. You handed me your card with your personal contact number.” Rambling, that is what she was doing, of course he would remember handing his personal contact number out! “You mentioned you had a position on your staff that I might be interested in pursuing.”
“Of course Mattie, Hello, I am glad you took me up on my offer and called. I was thinking this weekend, about our conversation and was considering how very impressed I was, with the fire of emotion you possess.”
“Yes, well that may be putting it mildly.” Chuckling, they connected on some faraway energy that Mattie had not yet experienced in life. With so many questions in her mind, Mattie found herself running on about those deep emotions she felt for her country and her fellow Americans. Pausing to take a breath, she realized what she had been doing. She stopped abruptly, JD encouraged her not to stop, not ever when it came to feeling the fire of love for this country.
Mattie knew she had connected with someone very special in this JD Lindquist. Knowing she was responsible for her attractions to make her dreams come true, Mattie wondered if this was the man who would open her floodgates to satisfy the deepest personal desires she had. Only time would tell.
She met Tess later that afternoon for tennis and realized as she took up her racket, that she had not felt so invigorated in years. Marveling at how, after all this time of realizing the beauty of life, there remained even more to be experienced. How wonderful the belief that your power lies within. You make your dreams come true, by dreaming them, believing them and focusing on them.
As the girls sat for tea after their match, Tess prompted Mattie, “Okay, what is responsible for this energy field you are vibrating, that is simply charged with glow? You didn’t call that Representative did you? You wouldn’t, you are too old fashioned in your beliefs, after all, what have I always told you about not calling back too soon?”
Laughing, they discussed the conversation, the sound of his voice, the dreams he has for this Nation, his faith for unity, his hope for freedom. Mattie said, “You know I believe that there is no, one perfect person who matches everything you desire and dream about for a life partner. I do believe though, that your dreams come true, by trusting that all you are and emanate, into an all knowing field of love. With that belief, comes my faith, that the one person you are drawing to, will one day show up! I don’t know if he is the one yet, but I definitely feel the energy he exudes is on the same wavelengths as mine.” With that, they proceeded to discuss the pumpkin cake they were devouring and enjoy the time they shared as lifelong friends often do. Leaving time to tell what the outcome of Mattie’s meeting with JD would develop into.
Mattie did however, ponder those thoughts later, considering how life roads take new turns, the latest being an invitation from JD to attend a dinner sponsored for their party, as his date. She thought how, not everyone needs to serve as a politician to show respect and love for their country, sometimes you stand behind the scenes, as a support group.
Mattie realized while she had been thinking Tess had been waiting for Mr. Right all along, she had been doing the very same thing, just in a different way. As she had stood in defense of Tess’ more meek character, she had been being prepared to be a stronger proponent of one’s beliefs. It was true, the two were not complete opposites in core values, merely in personalities. As she well knew, they both believed so strongly in faith, love and honor.
This faith the two friends with such devoted love for their Country shared, brought about the knowledge, everyone needs to support that Country by voting to the best of their beliefs, for those who represent those beliefs and that vote should be protected and honored as representing one for all and all for one! One Nation, under God, Indivisible, Our Nation, God Bless the United States of America.
Happy Anniversary America!
