KILLING TIME IN ETERNITY

August 27, 2020 by Fall Writing Contest 2020 Leave a Comment

This story is by Linda C Furlong and was part of our 2020 Fall Writing Contest. You can find all the writing contest stories here.

“I am.”

I have no limits. I create, destroy, love or hate. I am neither male or female. I am. Existing for eternity I see all, know all and do all. My environment is boundless and I have the capability of manipulating every particle and atom in the universe, for they are at my mercy.

Galaxies await my attention for conception. Controlling their fate belongs to me alone. I gather millions of stars and planets together and stir them clockwise. Spinning, spinning, reaching hundreds of miles per second, creating a cosmic pinwheel. Full spectrum colors dazzle as they take on a spiral form born with a simple twirl of my finger. I produce another spiral galaxy and this time I fling it like an arrow sending it into the middle of the first.

Wham! The target bursts into a ring-like structure of stars inspiring me to create  more galaxies of various shapes and colors. This streatches my artistic flare.

“Finally, designs fitting of my limitless abilities!”

I have also created my own audience, a divine council of supernatural beings, to watch me as I work.  I’d like to think they enjoy my pastimes as much as I do. The Seraphim are the wise ones, deserving of respect. They are always at my side, giving me suggestions. My Cherubim are the sweet ones that fill my heart with love. They critique my work when I’m finished and are always tactful as they do.

Then there are my Archangels. Watching over me, protecting me…or so they’d like to think.  They’re like wild children, flexing their muscles, each trying to be better at their assignments than the others. I love my celestial beings so much I have given them free will.  Sometimes, the choices they make cause disagreements. It’s normal when you have free will. In the end they always atone for any rude actions, except for one. As time goes on it’s my morning star that disappoints me.

He’s the most beautiful being I ever  created, but he has become prideful and is distancing himself from me. My other angels tell me of his boasting.

“I am the morning star and ame wiser than our leader. There isn’t any reason for me to bow before him.”

This Archangel has become a dragon poisoning the minds of others with the fire of his words.

“Lucifer, why do you do this? I’m your father and ruler why do you rebel?”

“I feel because you are my father, I’m endowed with the same powers as yours. I should be allowed to rule and take your place as your heir.”

“My heir? Do you think I am mortal? Do you think my rule will end? How dare you even think that’s a possibility! You will feel my wrath if you persist with this  kind of thinking.”

“Since you will not allow me to rule over the kingdom, I will fight you for it. I will show you how powerful I am! I have an army that will defeat yours. You have ruled long enough!”

“This choice is wrong and you will regret making it. My power is endless and I can end your existence right now if I choose, but if it’s a fight you want, then you shall have it!”

A heinous war ensued, angels against angels. The dragon and his followers fight back, but they are no match for my army. Lucifer has lost his place in heaven. My wrath will be great. I will not tolerate disruption in my eternity. My heart aches at what I must do.

“Lucifer! You are now Satan, my adversary. You are no longer my morning star. Instead you are the angel of darkness. You and your minions will be exiled to that darkness for eternity.”

My angelic hosts watch with me as Satan, and his demon angels fall like lightning from heaven. The memory will be bitter.

It doesn’t matter how many eons pass in the forever of eternity, but now I feel the need to create something…more personal. I begin to mold aberrations of different shapes and sizes. This will help me ignore the ticking of my eternal clock. My time piece has no numbers on its face, only hands that advance at a universal pace which never ends.

I take one of my favorite galaxies and play with its orbs to create a pattern from small to large. Then I find a sun for them to circle and start the rotation of their solar system. Around and around, the planets rotate at different speeds.

“What’s this I see?”

One planet is different from the others, unique. It’s a dark void without form. Ah, yes. I remember now. It’s the darkness where Lucifer was exiled. This pathetic orb will become my personal project. Vengeance is mine. I’ll show Satan it is I that  make the rules.

My hands are stretched out over this void to calm and re-form it. I will give it atmosphere to protect it from the heat of the sun. It will have land and oceans. Plants will be added to maintain a mixture of life sustaining gas. What type of life will it be? Life that I can love, teach and admonish when needed, important life. For now, it is still dark, so before I create all this, there is one thing left for me to do.

“LET THERE BE LIGHT!”
